When deciding to create the recreation area of our dreams, we invest all our time and effort into it. However, to be able to enjoy this result and rest in a pleasant environment for many years, our bespoke cabins must be maintained well all year round. How to ensure their excellent condition and appearance?
While the need for maintenance of bespoke cabins depends a lot on the design itself, the geographical location of the plot, or the annual weather conditions, conventional wood preservatives against UV, rain, or insect damage are inevitable in any case. The truth is – each cottage requires individual care, therefore to say exactly how often your wooden house will have to be renovated – is not so simple. According to common practice, although an annual assessment of the condition of the wooden house and maintenance are necessary, we recommend repeating the complete and comprehensive protection of the wooden house on average every three years. It is important to mention that the need for maintenance work will also depend on the quality of the tools you choose for it.
First of all, we recommend regularly inspecting the wooden house and its roof – for damaged, loose tiles, deformed, leaky or full gutters, and open rafters. Pay attention to the chimney as well, look for damage on the chimney pipes, possible cracks between the chimney pipe and the chimney, or the chimney and the roof. Also, check the walls regularly, try to find and assess any cracks in the wood, faded stains, possible signs of powdery mildew or mold.
Based on the experience of specialists, caring for a wooden house by washing it from the outside (as well as from the inside) is a great way to inspect and thoroughly assess the condition of places you do not normally see. This way, you can also thoroughly remove any dirt on the surface of the walls of a wooden house, such as dust, mildew, pollen, bird droppings, or insect droppings. We recommend washing the surface of most log houses with a soft bristle brush and a special detergent. If you notice stains during the inspection process and the finish has faded, it is a sign that it is probably time to apply a new coat of paint. If you use oil-based products for this, evaluate the log nodules, as their color will let you know if it's time to apply a new coat of paint as well.
Gutter cleaning, control, and monitoring are also considered very important if the custom-made bespoke cabins are to remain of excellent quality for many years to come. The logs in a wooden house can darken due to water splashes, which can also cause decay, contamination, and many other costly problems. With regular maintenance of a wooden house, you will notice this at a very early stage.
We constantly remind our customers that wooden houses must be maintained from the moment their construction is completed. Given that the decomposition of wood is usually associated with heat, humidity, and air, only ensuring the protection of the wood of the house with special measures from the very beginning of its construction will protect the wooden house from future problems. According to practice, cottages have to be painted to order on average every three years, but there are also cases when the walls, which are constantly lit by the sun, change color a little faster. When it comes to paints for bespoke cabins, there are several types to choose from, depending on your preferences and budget. They can be made based on both oil and water, and both of these materials have their advantages and disadvantages. We prefer water-based protection products and paints, as these are not only more environmentally friendly, but are also used more widely, and paint colors tend to fade more slowly.
