‘Artist builds homeless shelters out of trash’

Gregory Kloehn is a kind-hearted and creative artist from Oakland, California who had the brilliant idea of creating small homes for homeless people out of recycled materials found on the street. He began his Homeless Homes Project when he realized that he could apply his construction skills to help people.

The first step is when Kloehn goes searching for items in containers and skips. He selects items for his practical architectural creations and constructs them out of whatever he finds – the door can be a refrigerator door, and the windows can be anything – even washing machine doors. Every sofa-sized home is built on wheels so that it can be pushed around. Apart from that, each home is different – it depends on what materials the artist finds on the streets.

What’s important is that each of these houses puts a roof over a homeless person’s head. Kloehn gets help from volunteers and even children from the local high school to build his creations and to improve the lives of homeless people.
